What do I get out of being a self-payer?
Self-funding a series of conversations with a psychologist has some advantages.
- More flexible appointment scheduling:Self-pay patients can schedule their appointments more freely, as they are not bound by the requirements of health insurance companies. They can decide for themselves how often they go for counseling and at what intervals they attend the appointments. Short-term agreements are also possible.
- No waiting times:Self-pay patients do not have to wait long for an appointment. As a rule, the waiting time is not more than two weeks.
- Tax deductibility:The costs of self-funded psychotherapy are tax deductible as extraordinary expenses.
- No diagnosis, no risk surcharges:Self-pay consultations forgo diagnoses because mental health problems and symptoms are seen more as the result of a dysfunctional whole and less as a pathology/disease of the person. Therefore, there is no diagnostic deposit with the health insurance company and self-pay patients are not recorded as “mentally ill” or “pre-mentally ill.” This can have financial advantages with life, disability or private health insurance, as risk surcharges due to psychotherapy are eliminated.
- Not a barrier to tenure: Self-funded psychotherapy can be beneficial even if tenure is pending. Self-paid psychological counseling differs from psychotherapy reimbursed by health insurance in that no diagnostic deposit is documented that the medical officer could access if the patient were released from confidentiality.
